Plasma Spray

Plasma Coatings

Poeton offer a variety of plasma spray processes. Each process effectively fires a stream of highly heated particles at high velocity on to the prepared substrate. The substrate is typically prepared by a blasting process to give a coarse surface profile. The near molten particles then hit the surface and upon cooling and contracting, mechanically bond to the surface. The process is continued to build up a layer of particles, with a dense packing structure.

The thermal plasma spray process can be carried out by using a variety of different methods. These include plasma spray, wire spray, electric arc spraying and HVOF. Each technique allows different materials to be applied to the substrate, in different ways. The desired properties of the coating will be a factor of the process method and powder/wire material.

Typical plasma spray coatings that we offer are; chrome oxide, yttria stabilised zirconia, tungsten carbide, molybdenum alumina, alumina/polyester, abradable coatings and chrome replacement coatings. Our expert plasma coating engineers will be able to guide you through selecting the best plasma spray option for your application.

We have also formulated our own ceramic-metallic blends to provide unique surface properties, which can be tailored to increase hardness, wear resistance, thermal barrier, abrasion resistance and anti-fretting. To find out more about these coatings and the properties they can provide please see our Apticote 800 range.

In addition to our Apticote 800 range, we have also developed thermal spray/Polymer composites, through our Apticote 810 coatings. These composite coatings allow additional properties to be achieved, such as: low friction, release, corrosion resistance and even FDA compliance. Where standard polymer coatings are relatively soft and wear easily, our Apticote 810 coatings provide fantastic non–stick properties with additional toughness, hardness and enhanced wear properties.

THERMAL SPRAY

Apticote 800

Icon showing small pieces abrasively wearing a part

Reduces abrasive wear

Thermal spray reduces both low stress abrasive wear with the use of ceramic and high stress abrasive wear through ceramic coatings.

Reduces fretting and surface fatigue

Tougher coatings, such as those using nickel based alloys, will resist cracking and oxidisation – both characteristics of fretting fatigue.

Erosion protection

Erosion, by impinging particles or fluids, is best resisted by tough thermal spray coatings rather than simply hard coatings.

Salvage of parts

Parts that have been damaged, worn or eroded can be reclaimed with thermal sprays. The damaged areas are cleaned and blasted before being coated with a material that is a close match to the original substrate. The part is coated to an oversize before being ground back to size.

Corrosion protection

Nickel, chrome and cobalt based thermal sprays are used for corrosion protection and often sealed to close up any residual porosity.

Thermal barrier

Ceramic thermal sprays, such as alumina and yittria stabilised zirconia provide low conductivity and an oxygen diffusion barrier that protects vulnerable substrates.

Superb adhesion

The thermal spray application technique has been specifically developed for the Apticote 810 range of coatings to yield a surface texture which maximises the polymer adhesion.

FDA compliance

USDA/FDA Compliant

We can select or design an appropriate Apticote 810 in which the polymer and undercoat comply with the regulations for contact with food or medical products.

  • FOOD MOULDS
Providing a mould tool life increase for sticky abrasives products that conventional coatings couldn’t.
  • CONFECTIONERY PROCESSING
Extending the life of extrusion die tools for use with products so sticky it peels of conventional non-stick coatings.
  • MEDICAL GAUZE
Reducing friction and wear on abrasive and sticky medical wear that previously cut through stainless steel.
  • PACKAGING
Preventing build-up of deposits on packaging chutes caused by adhesion against an aluminium arm.

General Magnaplate’s Plasmadize Coating

Part of the Apticote 810 range is offered in partnership with General Magnaplate and is also known as Plasmadize. Poeton are the only UK licensees of Magnaplate’s Plasmadize coatings. The Poeton – General Magnaplate relationship stretches back over 30 years in which time treatment solutions and expertise have been shared in order to provide the complete range of surface coatings to customers on both sides of the Atlantic.

Apticote 810 plasma polymer composite uses a specially formulated graded structure that provides the exceptional bond strength of the coating. The plasma layer provides a robust bond to the substrate material whilst also providing the perfect key for the polymer.
