Tungsten Disulphide (WS2)

TUNGSTEN DISULPHIDE (WS2)

Tungsten Disulphide (WS2) is a dry film lubricant that are typically used where liquid lubricants would not be suitable. Tungsten disulphide forms a crystalline lattice structure and it is the weak sulphur to sulphur bonds that allows the layers to shear and act as the lubricating mechanism.

Tungsten Disulphide coatings can provide low friction, high load bearing, chemical resistance, abrasion resistance, as well as corrosion resistance. A balance of these properties can be produced by varying the ratio of lubricating pigment to binder as well as adjusting the binder type and cure temperature. Tungsten Disulphide would be used in preference to Molybdenum Disulphide (MoS2), where the application experiences higher loading and higher temperatures up to 500°C.

Tungsten disulphide has most famously been used in NASA projects, where low friction properties were required in extreme conditions.
