Electroless Nickel

electroless nickel plating

The Apticote 400 electroless nickel process provides a unique combination of high quality, rapid throughput and turn-round with superb performance. There are a wide variety of coating options, one of which will satisfy your particular requirements for wear resistance, corrosion protection or aesthetic appearance.

The Poeton strength lies in our fully automated lines, with a unique control system that accurately maintains the bath chemistry and provides a constant deposition rate, as well as in our exceptional operator skills and experience. Your component will be plated exactly how you want it, where you want it and, above all, consistently.

Apticote 400 electroless nickel coatings can be applied in very thin deposits (minimum 5µ) with uniformity and dimensional precision on most metallic substrates, including mild steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminium and titanium. This allows the designer to choose his substrate and mating parts on the basis of a need for strength, light-weight or corrosion resistance. Any problems of wear or corrosion that might occur with such materials can be overcome with one of the Apticote 400 options.

Properties and Benefits
  • Low wear and high hardness
In abrasive situations Apticote 400 Electroless Nickel can reduce the wear on substrates like stainless steel by over 50%.
  • High stress abrasive wear factors

    low stress abrasive wear factors

In adhesive, metal-to-metal situations, Apticote 400 Electroless Nickel provides even greater wear protection. The hardness of the Apticote 400 nickel matrix can be increased to 1,000Hv by heat-treatment at 400DegC.

  • Corrosion protection

Corrosion protection by electroless nickel relies on the integrity of the coating; it is not a sacrificial layer and provides only a diffusion barrier. Hence, Poeton's high level of plating skill and quality controlled processing ensures deposits that have minimum defects. An example of the relative corrosion protection that can be provided is given below; for best results you should specify the Apticote 400P or the Apticote 460G coatings.

  • Uniformity

Apticote 400 electroless nickel provides predictable uniform coverage in the range 5 to 50µ, depending on the application. It is applied to your finished product without any need for post-machining. It can even coat internal surfaces, thread forms and bores.

  • Substrate materials

Using our extensive R&D capability, Poeton have developed the optimum pre-treatment sequences for each substrate type, so that Apticote 400 electroless nickel can be applied with confidence to materials like titanium and aluminium, as well as the more usual range of engineering and stainless steels.

Specifically, Apticote 400 can bring acceptable tribology to a lightweight material, a vital property for aerospace and automotive applications.
