| Aptec. The coatings for all motorsport seasons | 29th September 2003 |
When a European Karting Champion contacted Poeton Industries in the early nineties to enquire whether surface coating could improve the performance of his racing pistons, little did the company know that the conversation would lead to the formation of its Aptec Motorsport Division.
In the ten years or more since that first enquiry Poeton Aptec has developed an unrivalled portfolio of coating systems, including motorsport's current favourite, Apticote Ceramic 2000. This unique coating provides exceptional wear characteristics, low friction and excellent oil retention for the pistons and cylinder bores of some of the UK's leading high-performance karting, biking and motor racing teams.
Poeton Aptec also provides teams with a very fast turn-around for refurbishment and damage repair during the season, a service that is proving essential for seriously competitive in many areas of motorsport.
Karting customers include Gavin Bennett leader of this year's British Long Circuit Karting Championship and Mal Witts current leader of the 2003 British Short Circuit Karting Championship.
On the bike racing circuit Aptec sponsors the Yamaha team with the supply of piston coatings in the Supermoto Championship. Yamaha's engine builder Willpower Engineering also specifies Apticote Ceramic 2000 for cylinder bore coatings. Warren Steele, current NORA Supermoto leader and winner of last year's ACU winter series also uses engine components coated by Poeton, as does Alison KTM, whose rider Stephen Sword has just won British MX Championship
In the World Sidecar Championship ex world champion Steve Webster, who is running second this year and chasing another trophy, is sponsored by Aptec.
Historic racers have also got the message. Poeton coatings also feature on the FWD Molnar Manx of Glen English current leader of the FIM World Classic Series. Aptec also provides coating technology for customers in Speedway, Motocross, Road Racing and Rallying, including Andrew Burton, a front runner in this year's British National Rally series, whose engine parts have been treated with Apticote coatings.
The Apticote Ceramic 2000 cylinder bore coating, which has also been supplied to the engine builders that manufacture the Formula One engines for the successful Mercedes Maclaren racing team, has been fully tested for engines running up to and including 22,000 rpm. This metal matrix coating system was specifically developed for high performance automotive applications such as pistons, engine block cylinder bores and engine liners. The technology is suitable for four-stroke and two-stroke engines, spark ignition and compression ignition, in both alloy and cast iron crankcases, from single cylinder to V12 applications.
The processing line used to apply Apticote Ceramic 2000 has also been the subject of intensive development to guarantee motorsport customers a reliable and repeatable application of the coating.
