Poeton Offers Friction and Wear Data from Over 400 Surface Coating Tests

POETON OFFERS FRICTION AND WEAR DATA
FROM OVER 400 SURFACE COATING TESTS

Realising that there was a lack of real data on the wear and friction properties of engineering coatings rubbing against different substances, Poeton Industries Limited, a world leader in surface coating technology, embarked on an 18-month project to test over 200 coatings against steel and a number of other materials.

Now the data from more than 400 friction and wear tests, held in a newly created Coating Properties Database, will be made available to customers - initially through the company's technical department. However, Technical Manager, Dr John Archer says Poeton is investigating ways to make the data generally available via its existing ISIS coating selection software, which is available currently through the internet.

Commenting on the Coating Properties Database, Dr John Archer says that what started as an exercise to increase Poeton's own knowledge has developed into an essential database for design and manufacturing engineers, with the results from hundreds of tests available in tabular form and as a graphic display.

"The results enable engineers, using friction or wear as the selection criteria, to identify the best coating for a particular substrate and/or the best material to use with coated components " He says, adding that Poeton is already using the Database itself to qualify coating materials, prove manufacturers' claims for their materials and to provide information where none currently exists.

"We have also used it to improve the specification of some coatings and refine others, and we will certainly use it as a benchmark when developing new ones." He continued.

In total, more than 200 different coatings were tested against hardened steel using a pin-on-disc test to measure friction and wear. Some have also been tested for compatibility against a variety of other materials, including brass, nylon and PTFE.
