Engine Bore Coatings
Our Apticote Ceramic 2000 bore coating leads the way in all areas of motor sport; a high quality metal/ceramic that is unsurpassed in its anti wear, friction and scuffing capability. Blocks, liners and barrels; we can coat them all, guaranteeing a precision finish that will reduce blow-by and loss of compression, enable
rapid bedding in, and
minimise ring wear.
And what’s more, we
are now announcing
two new bore coatings,
Apticote 2020 and
Apticote 3030, promising
even greater
performance in the
most competitive areas.

Cylinder Liners |
 |
Pistons |
As well as the bore coatings, Poeton can solve all the problems of fretting or galling between the OD of the liner and the cylinder block with one of their low friction, anti-seizure coatings.
The Apticote 200L polymer coating or the <Apticote 450> Nickel/Polymer composite provide complete protection, whilst guaranteeing dimensional precision and no distortion of the liner.
Apticote 450 eliminated the problem of fretting induced mechanical failures as the liners ‘pant’ with the cycling of the piston.
Piston Rings
Against Apticote Ceramic 2000 coated cylinder bores, Poeton precision piston ring coatings provide the ultimate performance, allowing optimum running-in without high wear and increased blow-by.
Specifically, to overcome problems of scuffing (common with chrome-plated rings), you should specify the < Apticote 1080 ceramic nitride> coating.
In laboratory trials, hard chrome abrades and scuffs the scuffs the liner coating, cast iron rings wear rapidly, but Apticote 1080 coated rings show little wear and do not damage the liner.
And for reduced friction and increased engine power, you should ask for the <Apticote 1060 ‘black diamond’> coating.

Apticote coatings enable you to push your aluminium pistons to the limit, with more power, less wear and longer life.
Piston crowns
Apticote 420* applied to the piston crown provides a highly reflective surface, reducing carbon build-up without reducing the thermal conductivity.
Alternatively, depending on your needs, you can specify an Apticote 800 thermal barrier, increasing combustion temperatures, allowing a leaner burn, with greater engine efficiency and power.
Piston skirts
Apticote 200MS is the ultimate piston skirt coating. It gives low friction, prevents metal transfer between the piston and the cylinder bore, and above all provides increased engine power.
Gudgeon pin bores
To protect the gudgeon pin bores, call up our precision anodic composite coating, Apticote 350. It provides wear resistance, lubricant retention on the closed surfaces, and reduces the sliding friction. And all that adds up to yet more engine power!
Ring grooves
Precision coverage, with an even, controlled thickness coating around the whole profile, that is what is required for effective protection of the ring groove.
Apticote 420*, with its special formulation for piston alloys, provides just those characteristics. It is hard, wear-resistant, and resists micro-welding and ‘belling out’ of the groove

Gudgeon Pins
Poeton offer the ultimate gudgeon pin coating in <Apticote 1060 ‘black diamond’>.
It eliminates metal transfer from the pin bore, even if lubrication is starved, it reduces
Friction and increases power, and all this without compromising precision fits on affecting the heat-transfer!
In laboratory sliding tests, <Apticote 1060> outperforms all DLC type coatings, with lower fiction and greater endurance.
Valves
For valve-stem wear and scuffing protection, look no further than <Apticote 800> molybdenum-based coatings. High hardness (700Hv), negligible porosity (<0.5%), high precision (+/- 2µ), expert masking all combine to provide the ultimate valve stem coating.
Pneumatic valve train
In high revving racing engines, the pneumatic sleeves and pistons must operate with incredible precision, and only the best quality coatings and finishing can provide the required performance. Either Apticote 350 and Apticote 400 will eliminate wear, give the lowest friction, and guarantee absolute precision. Around the profile, thickness variation will be less than +/- 2µ.

Cams and followers
Scuffing is a problem of the past with <Apticote 1060 ‘black diamond’>. In laboratory tests, it provides 10 times the life
given by conventional nitriding or nitro-carburising. Only 3µ thick, it gives no problems with precision or coverage.
Heads
Apticote 420*, applied to the internal surface of the head, provides a highly reflective surface, reducing carbon build-up without reducing the
thermal conductivity. At 25µ thick, the coating is highly
precise with every geometric,
feature being effectively covered.

Exhaust Systems and Turbochargers
We can protect surrounding components from exhaust heat damage with the most effective zirconia or
alumina thermal barrier
coatings. Our high-
energy thermal spray
process provides the
highest quality coatings,
with predictable and closely controlled thickness, superb substrate bonding and maximum insulation.
The temperature profile shown below is typical, the external temperature exhaust being less than 100Deg C. Follow Apticote 800 for more details.
